The Decision

How your feedback informed the decision

Thank you to all who responded in our recent community consultation to determine the preferred location for the Red Cliffs half basketball court. After consideration of all of the votes received, along with direct consultation with Red Cliffs youth, the final site for the half court will be located at Quandong Park.

Consultation indicated a strong preference from voters for a full-sized half basketball court (rather than just a large basketball key space), which will meet the requirements for 3x3 basketball competitions. The additional space requirement is supported by this Quandong Park location.
The location selected at Quandong Park also meets the requirements for a site that is visible, close to toilets, offers natural shade and provides the opportunity to further enhance this area with picnic tables, water stations and lighting if required.
We hope construction of the new half court to commence over the next few months.

How we engaged with community

Advertising for the consultation of the half basketball court started 27 September 2023. Information was provided during various consultation sessions, in addition to Facebook, local newspapers, newsletters, emails, posters, word of mouth and group conversations.

Residents in the Red Cliffs area and surrounds were offered multiple opportunities to provide feedback for the preferred location of the half basketball court, including via hard copy or online surveys, and picture board voting at local Red Cliffs primary schools.

Community Engagement took place at a series of locations and events in Red Cliffs including, Red Cliffs Connected BBQ, Red Cliffs Market, Red Cliffs Focus Group meeting, Red Cliffs Primary School, Red Cliffs Secondary College and Red Cliffs East Primary School.

Mildura Rural City Council has also partnered with Hands Up Mallee and VicHealth to support the co-design by youth of the half basketball court in Red Cliffs. Young people from Red Cliffs have been invited to help us co-design what this community space will look and feel like, including the location, design and how the space will be activated. As the project progresses we will continue to engage with the young people of Red Cliffs and share this information with the community.

The Consultation

Working with community to achieve your goals

We’re excited to partner with VicHealth to build a half basketball court in Red Cliffs.

Consultation conducted in Red Cliffs, which commenced with the Red Cliffs Pool Party in late 2022 and continued with the Red Cliffs & Carwarp Community Plan 2023-2028 consultation in May 2023 indicated a strong priority was the need for more things for the youth of the community to do. Consultation with the youth of Red Cliffs determined that a basketball court could be utilised by people of all ages.

Midura Rural City Council together with Vic Health have secured funding for a half basketball court in Red Cliffs, this will provide more opportunities for outdoor recreation and physical activity in the community as well as helping support youth engagement activities.

The half basketball court also aligns with Mildura Rural City Council outcome of Community Vision 2021-2040, Community - We will be a healthy, respectful and connected community.

Careful consideration has been given to select several potential locations for the new half-court, based on the following:

  • Council owned land
  • Safety for users (lighting, passive surveillance, passage to and from)
  • Accessibility (can be accessed on foot)
  • Proximity to other facilities (toilets, drink water)

We appreciate you taking the time to complete this short consultation survey on your preferred location, or if there is a more suitable location we have not considered.
