Project background
Community feedback for the Red Cliffs & Carwarp Community Plan 2023 – 2028 recognised a dog park was desired in Red Cliffs. This led to an action, in the Community Plan, under the Recreation theme, to ‘Explore the development for a public off leash dog park.’
The establishment of dog parks across the municipality is supported in Mildura Rural City Council's Public Open Space Strategy and Recreation Strategy 2021 – 2031. Action 6 in the Strategy is to ‘provide a good distribution of off-leash areas throughout the urban area for dog exercise and socialisation.
This project
This survey is to get community feedback and be prepared in the likelihood Mildura Rural City Council successfully obtains funding to install a dog park in Red Cliffs.
Identifying the right location for the dog park is important to the success and safety of the facility and to ensure that there is an acceptable level of surrounding locality. The right location must adequately address the following “site assessment” as identified by the Mildura Rural City Council Off Leash Dog Park Development Guidelines:
- Be easily accessible by road
- Have adequate space for off-street parking
- Have connections to existing pedestrian paths and trails
- Located within walking distance to public toilets
- Be a reasonable distance from children’s playground
- Be within walking distance of residential areas
- Have good surveillance from public areas (not an isolated site)
- Have good drainage
- Close to existing services ie. potable water
- Be a relatively flat site
- Some natural vegetation for shade
- Ideally a larger sized area is preferable. An area between 2,500 and 3,000 square metres allows more opportunities to create different activity areas (ie. passive and active spaces) within the park. A larger space will help minimise overcrowding and potential dog-dog conflict, and overuse of ground surfaces.
