Community Engagement

No community engagement is currently being undertaken.

Background

In August 2020, Mildura Rural City Council (MRCC) resolved to proceed with the Mildura Heritage Study (Part B – Stage 2) including the review of the City & Shire of Mildura Conservation Study (Andrew C. Ward June 1988).

Following the Adoption of Stage 1 of the Study and resolution to proceed with Stage 2, GML Heritage was appointed to assist with the preparation of Stage 2 of the study, along with volunteers appointed to form a Community Reference Group for Stage 2 of the project.

The study comprehensively reviews heritage items and places for the northern part of the Mildura Rural City Council Local Government Area. Part of the review also considers and updates (where required) items identified in the Mildura Conservation Study, 1988 (known as the Andrew Ward Study).

Community Reference Group

A Community Reference Group made up of knowledgeable community members, representing each of the smaller townships along with the main urban centre, including Council's Heritage Advisor Garry Stanley, was established at the start of the project.

Expressions of interest were sought and received from community members with a passion for Mildura LGA's heritage to form a Reference Group to assist Council and the consultants GML Heritage, with preparing the strategic background for a future planning scheme amendment, to include relevant sites in Council’s heritage overlay.

Representation from community members and groups with an interest and experience in local heritage, formed the group membership, working in an advisory capacity to ensure relevant issues were referred for consideration and inclusion.

The Reference Group commenced in August 2022 with a concluding date of March 2024.

For more information about the Reference Group, please see the Terms of Reference in the Document Library.

Project Stages

Stage 1 of the project identified and nominated places and heritage items for assessment and was completed in August 2020. Please see the Document Library for a copy of the adopted project report, listing places for assessment in Stage 2 of the work.

Stage 2 of the project assessed the items and places nominated for consideration and further assessment in Stage 1 of the project. In Stage 2 of the study, GML Heritage (formerly known as Context) reviewed Mildura LGA’s heritage assets (northern part of the LGA), including preparation of a thematic environmental history, undertaking Community consultation and engagement activities, and the identification of potential heritage places.

Stage 3 implements the findings and recommendations of Stage 2 of the study via a Planning Scheme Amendment.
